Fall Into Healthy Habits: Simple Ways to Support Your Immune System

As summer winds down and we settle into a new season of routines, schedules, and eventually cooler weather, it’s a great time to think about supporting your immune system. Fall and winter often bring more time indoors, busier schedules, and increased exposure to everyday germs. While no single food or supplement can prevent illness, building healthy habits now can help support your body’s natural defenses throughout the seasons ahead.

Prioritize Quality Sleep

As routines shift from summer to fall, sleep can sometimes take a backseat. Most adults should aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night to give the body time to rest and recharge. Create a relaxing bedtime routine that helps you wind down, such as reading, stretching, or enjoying a cup of caffeine-free herbal tea. Chamomile or peppermint tea can make a soothing addition to your evening routine while providing a calming moment to help manage everyday stress.

Keep Moving

Fall is a great time to take advantage of comfortable temperatures and enjoy movement outdoors. Aim for about 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week, but don’t feel like exercise has to look a certain way. Walk your neighborhood, go for a hike, take a fitness class, play a sport, or simply find movement that you genuinely enjoy. Consistency matters more than perfection!

Get Immune-Supporting Nutrients from Food

Rather than relying on supplements, start with food when possible. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, and kiwi. Vitamin D can be found in fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified milk and plant-based milks. Zinc is abundant in beef, poultry, seafood, beans, pumpkin seeds, and dairy products. For probiotics, look to foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods containing live cultures.

Build a Balanced Plate

A colorful, varied diet provides the vitamins, minerals, fiber, protein, and other nutrients your body needs to function well. Make it a goal to regularly include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein throughout the day. Think berries, apples, leafy greens, roasted vegetables, oats, whole-grain bread, beans, fish, poultry, and eggs. Fall is also the perfect time to enjoy seasonal produce like apples, pears, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and winter squash!

Stay Hydrated as the Seasons Change

Hydration is important year-round, even when the temperatures begin to drop and thirst may not be as noticeable. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip regularly throughout the day. Water, milk, and other unsweetened beverages all contribute to hydration. As the weather cools, warm beverages like herbal tea can be an easy and comforting way to get more fluids while creating a relaxing moment in your day.

Don’t Forget the Basics

Some of the most helpful immune-supporting habits have nothing to do with food. Regular hand washing can help reduce the spread of germs, while managing stress supports overall well-being. Take time to get outside, connect with friends and family, practice deep breathing, or simply slow down when your schedule allows. Small habits can add up, especially as the busy holiday season approaches.

Bringing It All Together

Supporting your immune system isn’t about finding a magic food, supplement, or wellness hack. It’s about creating a foundation of healthy habits that you can carry from the end of summer through fall and into winter. Focus on nourishing foods, regular movement, quality sleep, hydration, stress management, and good hygiene—and remember that you don’t have to do everything perfectly to support your health. Start with one or two habits now, and let them build throughout the season.
